What Is Melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition that appears in the form of discolored patches that are darker than the patient’s natural skin color. Melasma typically occurs in the facial region in areas like the forehead, chin, cheeks, and bridge of the nose, and it can also appear on the forearms and the neck.
Melasma is more common in women than in men and is most common in people who tan easily or have naturally brown skin.
Potential Causes of Melasma
The cause of melasma is complex. Factors implicated in the development of melasma include genetics, sun exposure, hormones, and certain medications like oral contraceptive pills.
Treatments to restore the skin’s natural pigment can range from topical creams, to oral medications, to in-office procedures such as chemical peels, microneedling, or lasers. Some procedures, particularly lasers, carry a high risk for relapse and the disease becoming more resistant to treatment so consultation and treatment should always be done with caution and by an expert.
Melasma can be frustrating to treat. It is often slow to respond to treatment, especially if it has been present for a long time. Even in those who get a good result from treatment, pigmentation may reappear on exposure to sun and heat.
